In my experience, they almost never do. They show up during a simple repair job that turns out to be anything but, or on a tractor crossing a freshly mowed field, or while learning to play a new song, talking with a stranger, working with a deeply troubled teenager, or sitting with a struggling family member. Sometimes they’re so well disguised I don’t recognize them until months or years later, when I finally understand what I was being taught.
House Mountain Views is a collection of these moments.
As a builder, musician, writer, teacher, husband, father, and grandfather, I have gathered a lifetime of experiences seen through different lenses. This book is not an autobiography, but rather a sampling of the ideas, experiences, people, and observations that have shaped me. Some are funny, like the old farm trailer that defeated every tool we tried to use until an old man asked the right question. Some are sad, some are celebratory, and some are still so raw they are hard to put to paper.
The subjects range from family and friendship to building, making music, teaching teenagers, aging, resilience, mistakes, and gratitude. Woven throughout is the influence of the Tao Te Ching and its invitation to move beyond certainty, embrace change, and allow life to unfold all around us.
The older I get, the more I value learning to ask the right questions, noticing things that are easily missed, and seeing the familiar from an unexpected perspective.
Sometimes the world doesn’t need to change. Sometimes we just need to change where we stand.
