National Authors Day Celebration

I’m pleased to announce that I have been selected as one of the Featured Authors at this year’s National Authors Day event in Knoxville, “Celebrate Our Authors,” for my novel “Pushing Back.”

Untitled

The event will take place on November 1st in downtown Knoxville at Union Avenue Books and the East Tennessee Historical Society.

More details to follow in the next couple of weeks.

It’s very gratifying to have one of my works selected; I write because the creative process feeds me in ways that nothing else can, but outside recognition by a panel of judges who are respected writers is an honor in a class all its own.

A career working with teenagers on the fringes of society has made me both sensitive to and appreciative of the complexities of character and the struggles, inner and outer, that we all wrestle with in one form or another. My writing emphasizes character development over action, and, as a lifelong Southerner, the rhythms and cadence of the Southeastern United States influence both my spoken and written voice.

  1. Jim, I just saw your email. What an honor! I’m so glad you and Pushing Back are being recognized for National Authors Day! I always knew I’d be proud to be able to say ‘I knew you when…’. Congratulations!!! I’m so happy for you.

Canada is still wonderfully Canada. While you were sweltering in the 90’s yesterday, I was wearing multi layers, even gloves, and driving up to Inverness (up island) in the rain, wind, sun, and sleet…all of the aforementioned, alternating. Yes, sleet on October 3rd. Looks like I might get chased out of here earlier than I planned.

Safehavened is in the rewrite phase, and redesign. I’m chopping it up and, as I clean it up, I’m rewriting it in essay form. It’s going to end up resembling the style of Facets. My editor suggested it and I had thought about it, too, while writing. I was too far along to switch horses in midstream, at that point, and decided I just needed to get everything down first. So, it’s more work than I’d hoped but I now have a direction and a clear path for that unwieldy mass of words.

I miss Hodgepodge. You seem to have found the fast track…good things are happening for you, one after another, as they should be. I don’t know if you have the time or the interest to resume our meetings once or twice a month, for writing talk or just as a group of friends, who happen to be writers, but, if you do, I would love to work to get us back on track. I am moved now…not planning to move again, so my mind is relieved of that major pressure, and I can be much more reliable. Think about it. If you decide against it, I’ll be sad but I’ll understand. You’re in demand now, Jim, and I predict that demand will pick up speed and breadth like a snowball downhill.

Again, heartfelt congratulations to you and Boone. Love you both!
