Boy Meets Dog

The story of Boone, an Appalachian teen forced by circumstance to grow up before he is ready, with no assets to speak of and more than his share of baggage to deal with, continues as a podcast with Chapter 22, out today.

In the newest chapter of “Pushing Back” Nancy abruptly cuts her visit short and leaves Boone feeling both hopeful and uncertain about what he’s supposed to do next. Like most teenagers, Boone is in uncharted territory, and is so socially isolated that he’s essentially flying blind.

Also in this chapter, Boone follows through on his plan to get a dog, and later ends up having an unexpectedly serious conversation with Gamaliel.

As always, you can find all the chapters here

or by clicking the “LISTEN . . .” tab on my website  and choosing from the several options for following along.

To all of you who are already following Boone’s story, my thanks. Hope you’re enjoying the ride. If you haven’t started yet, the chapter podcasts are between 15 and 20 minutes long, and come out once a week. The story is told from Boone’s point of view.

A career working with teenagers on the fringes of society has made me both sensitive to and appreciative of the complexities of character and the struggles, inner and outer, that we all wrestle with in one form or another. My writing emphasizes character development over action, and, as a lifelong Southerner, the rhythms and cadence of the Southeastern United States influence both my spoken and written voice.
