Picking up the Pieces

Chapter Nine of my podcast of “Pushing Back,” the first book in the Boone series, was released yesterday. For those of you who may not have been following along yet, Boone is trying to pick up the pieces of his life after the disintegration of his family. He gets a surprise visit from the local deputy sheriff, and later, in the woods behind the house, finds something that shows him that there were things about his father he didn’t know.

The experience of reading “Pushing Back” aloud for distribution has been an eye-opening one. For you writers out there, I highly recommend it, even without the distribution part. Even though I’d done multiple readthroughs and had several other pairs of eyes look at the manuscript and give me feedback, the act of reading it aloud slows me down and lets me enjoy the pace and cadence in a way that silent reading can’t match. It’s a different experience, in a very good way.

You can find all the chapters released so far in a couple of places: here on my website under the “LISTEN . . .” tab, or at the podcast site.

Hope you enjoy the book, and, as always, stay in touch.

A career working with teenagers on the fringes of society has made me both sensitive to and appreciative of the complexities of character and the struggles, inner and outer, that we all wrestle with in one form or another. My writing emphasizes character development over action, and, as a lifelong Southerner, the rhythms and cadence of the Southeastern United States influence both my spoken and written voice.
